Logic

Me: Kid? Did you wear this to school today?

Kid: yes…

Me: Umm… I think you need to pay more attention to matching your clothes.

Kid: But they do match!

Me: This shirt is red and white, these pants areĀ green and purple. How do they match?

Kid: They are both striped!

Our clothing woes are not over yet. I think we need to have a discussion about colors vs. patterns. Gah.

It’s an expression of her personality!! Or one of them anyway. :)

I gave up that discussion with my daughter. It’s totally a lost cause. As long as people don’t think *I* dressed her that way – I’m fine. LOL! She’s gotten better about matching pants/shirts – but now she seems to purposefully wear mismatched socks. ?! LOL!

This is why I have a sweater rack in each kid’s closet, with a complete outfit in each “shelf.” This way Tim doesn’t have to worry about what “matches,” what’s appropriate for preschool/school (in terms of what’s too “nice” to wear to preschool), etc. It works extremely well for us, and I bet it would work for the kid too. And if she really wants to pick out what she gets to wear – well the sweater rack has 8 shelves, so that’s 8 outfits for her to pick from!

Well…we did fine with Violet and now that she is 13, she is going through a non-matching phase. It is really, really, really annoying me. But, it is so much harder to do anything or say anything without fear of damaging her psyche for years to come. An expression of her individuality? I say that all individuals should match first and then express themselves after that :)
